Life in the Time of COVID-19, Part 12

Today we are featuring an eloquent short poem by San Antonio poet Lahab Assef Al-Jundi which was first published in the anthology “In These Latitudes” edited by Robert Bonazzi, in 2009. But, we feel, it has a message that may resonate with readers during this time of fear and crisis. The anonymous photo of a boy kicking the soccer ball – a scene that could have been photographed just about anywhere on Earth – is the perfect partner for the poem.

I Am Earth
By Lahab Assef Al-Jundi

Under an oak tree
a world climbs at my toes

I find a purple door
step into your dream

A boy kicks a soccer ball
down a dusty street in an old city

A man slips across a border
between escape and refuge

A sage opens a window
in a candle-lit room

A million acorns
falling
