San Antonio Arts Organizations Seek/Hire New Leaders

“We are excited to name Roberto Trevino as our first executive director,” said the orchestra’s board chair – and player – Brian Petkovich. “His passion, dedication and wealth of knowledge about the arts, the orchestra and the city, make him the right person to build on our success.”
The San Antonio Philharmonic is not playing during the summer months but the non-profit organization has just increased its staff in a significant way. As the press release says “the board of directors has taken the landmark step of naming an executive director,” the organization’s first. He is Roberto Trevino, an architect and a former three-term City Council member for District 1. He served on SA Phil’s board during this past, inaugural season.
Our readers will likely remember that The San Antonio Philharmonic is a young organization, formed by the musicians of the defunct San Antonio Symphony about a year ago. The new/old orchestra was graciously invited by the First Baptist Church of San Antonio to perform in the church sanctuary where all the concerts of the first season took place.
During his time on the City Council, Trevino was known as a supporter of the arts, and served as chair of the Arts and Culture committee.

The Magik Theatre has also added to its management team by hiring Melissa Zarb-Cousin as its first managing director. She will work in partnership with long-time artistic director Anthony Runfola. She’s no stranger to the Magik, however. As a 14-year-old, she participated in the all-girl musical “Miraculous St. Joan” presented by the North East School for the Arts at the Magik. According to the press release, “theater made a lasting impression on her.” As managing director, , she will bring her extensive business and fundraising skills to the “dual leadership” of the already successful youth theater company.
“We were seeking a dynamic and inspirational addition to our team, who embodies our commitment to arts education principles, promoting literacy, and providing quality arts programming for families. I believe that we have found that – and more – in Melissa, and we are incredibly delighted to welcome her back to our Magik Theater family,” said CEO, Frank Villani. Villani will stay as CEO and mentor Zarb-Cousin before transitioning to an independent consultant role this fall.
The Magik is also seeking a stage manager and a tour stage manager, in addition to other theater artists such as designers, scenic artists and play directors. Interested individuals can send resumes for consideration to www.magiktheatre.org.

Say Si, the long-term, free, after-school arts program on the Westside, is looking for a permanent executive director. The organization is currently overseen by Kathy Armstrong as its interim director for the last several months. The applications should be sent by Sept. 8 of this year to board.liaison@saysi.org. The after-school sessions offer instruction in the visual arts, theater, media arts and new media arts, to middle and high school students.
