The San Antonio Philharmonic is closing its season with the powerful Mahler’s Symphony No. 2. “Resurrection,” conducted by Music Director Jeffrey Kahane and featuring the wonderful San Antonio Mastersingers and soloists Erica Petrocelli, soprano and Josefina Maldonado, mezzo-soprano. According to the press release, Kahane has described this monumental work as one that changed his life the first time he heard it. That was back in high school, and now he decided to bring it to San Antonio concertgoers. The very title describes a grand and heavenly event.

This is a work of huge emotional depth, a symphonic masterpiece that deals with the themes of life, death and transcendence. The last concert of the Travelogue series presented by St. Peter’s Friends of Music is coming up with music of the Americas. (May 29, 1 p.m.; St.Peter Prince of the Apostles Catholic Church, 111 Barilla Place; free and open to the public.

For a different kind of music, you may want to see Kolton Moore & the Clever Few. Based in North Texas, they honor the roots of Country music, and rock & roll, while bringing a “unique voice to the conversation,” says the press release. At least two great musicals will be staged by San Antonio Theaters this spring: Cole Porter’s comedy classic, “Anything Goes” at the San Pedro Playhouse, and “Beautiful – The Carol King Musical – at the Wonder Theater. The first, a Tony Award-winning musical, is described as
“madcap comedy and timeless charm.” The announcement about “Beautiful” says the show features classics such “One Fine Day,” “So Far Away,” “Natural Woman” and many other iconic numbers. The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center and Say Si unite for Grupo Animo Youth Theater Program. The program offers a month-long theater workshop for students 13 to 18, providing an opportunity for young voices to be heard through performance art. On May 24, The River Artes District will host the first-ever River Artes District Studio Tour, featuring local artisans and small businesses showing their works and services. Visitors may stop by more than a dozen studios and creative spaces, meet the artists and buy works directly from them.  And here’s something  from history: The Karankawas & Tonkawas: A History of Power and Perseverance. This is a special presentation by Dr. Tim Seiter. In his talk, he explores the histories of these indigenous nations that built trade networks, skillfully used native plants and maintained control over their territories for longer than is often recognized. For instance,
