The arts scene is getting quieter now that summer is almost upon us. But let’s see what is going on.

The Inaugural Concert of The North East Wind Symphony, titled “The First” will be full of fanfares, big grand works and world premieres, as the ensemble is introducing itself to the public. Conducted by founder, Matthew Ramirez, and associated conductor, Teya Martin, “The First” is expected to be a joyous start to the North East Wind Symphony. At the Carver Center you can see a different style of music: Singer/songwriter, Jackie Venson’s 
version of the blues, which has invigorated Austin’s music scene with electric sound. She became the first Black woman to be named “Best Guitarist” at the Austin Music Awards, and recently performed at Rolling Stones’ Future of Music Showcase at SXSW. The AGARITA Chamber Players are known for their great performances but the ensemble also has a gallery where art exhibits are shown. Currently at the Agarita Loft, you can view “Proof- Wounds of Identity” a show featuring the work of Gloria Sanchez Hart; Celeste De Luna, Brandy Gonzalez, Thelma Ortiz-Muraida, Hannah Hurricane and Sabra Booth; the show is curated by Jon Hinojosa. Here’s a good reason to take a trip to Fredericksburg: The Fredericksburg Cello Festival, which will feature world-class cello performances. For two weeks, starting June 8, the Hill Country town will be a national hotspot for cello lovers. The cast of 25 festival performers is a who-is-who of cello virtuosos from the U.S., Asia and Europe. San Antonian, Kenneth Freudigman, will be among them. The fest also has an associated school. And here’s a musical comedy at the Tobin Center: The Addams Family. It’s described as “a comical feast” that embraces wackiness in every family. (June 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m.; tickets start at $63; tobi.tobincenter.org; 210-223-8624)

“Beautiful- The Carol King Musical is still playing at the Wonder Theater. Featuring classics such as “One Fine Day,” “Take Good Care of my Baby” and “Natural Woman,” the show is running through June 8s at the Wonderland of the Americas Mall; box office at 210-267-8388; directed by Chris Rodriguez and choreographed by Alonzo Corona.

A new and unique exhibit, “The Fine Art of Dining” features sculptural and visual artworks set-up as table installations, complete with place settings, serving pieces, utensils and more. These pieces were produced by ceramicists, fiber artists, painters and sculptors in a provocative exploration of “what it means to gather and share a meal.” It’s a unique display. At the Art Gallery Prudencia, you can see “Refractions: The Art of Crystal and Color,” a solo show by Korean artist Soon Y. Warren. (11 a.m. – 6 p.m. through July 12; the gallery is at 2518 N. Main Ave. 78212; 210-422-8681)

Ruby City has announced the appointment of Ashley Mireles as its new manager of Public Programs. She is a multidisciplinary artist, educator and seasoned arts administrator. Since 2022 she served as the Public Art Curator for the San Antonio River Foundation. 

Currently, Ruby City is “thtilled” to present interdisciplinary artist Joey Fauerso’s “Bedroom Paintings,” a boundary-pushing installation that combines the intimate act of sleeping and the history of painting.
