Last Chance to See RED DOT at Blue Star

By JASMINA WELLINGHOFF, Editor

The Red Dot Exhibit is the main annual fundraiser for Blue Star Contemporary, the first contemporary art institution founded in San Antonio by contemporary artists themselves, back in 1987. The event changed format this year, from a one-night-only to an extended period lasting a couple of months that gives art lovers and collectors more time to explore the offerings. At this point, however, only a couple of weeks are left, so we decided to remind everyone about the show which features more than 100 San Antonio artists, including quite a few well-known names. The proceeds benefit Blue Star’s exhibition program, professional development programs for artists and educational programs for students. Today, it’s hard to imagine the city’s art scene without Blue Star.

Participating artists include Andy Benavides, Anne Wallace, Barbara Felix, Cesar Martinez, Cathy Cunningham-Little, Cruz Ortiz, Danville Chadbourne, Kat Cadena, Gary Sweeney, Ethel Shipton, Trish Simonite, Hills Snyder, James Cobb, Jennifer Ling Datchuk, Sarah Fox, Riley Robinson, Ken Little, Kent Rush, Larry Graeber, Leigh Anne Lester, Margaret Craig, Nate Cassie, Raul Rene Gonzalez, Ansen Seale, and many others. It’s real treasure trove of contemporary art.

A special gallery has been reserved for “Artists of the Compound” who are designated as “honorees,” together with supporters Janet and Bruce Flohr, and Charles Butt and H-E-B. The “mysterious” compound is a cluster of houses owned by Mike Casey at Stieren and St. Mary’s Streets, in the King William District. Over the last 30 years, creative individuals such as artists, writers, musicians and performers, have lived in this area.

We cannot show you all the 100 or so pieces in the show, but we hope that what you’ll see here will stimulate your interest. Prices range from several hundred to several thousand. Red Dot closes on Jan. 9.
