Tap Dance Fest, Resurrection Symphony… News Roundup, July 25, 2020
For the past 17 years, The Third Coast Rhythm Project has organized a summer tap dance festival that brings to San Antonio famous masters of the art to teach master classes, and perform in Jazzed on Tap, the fest’s showcase of rhythm dancing and jazz music.
They are doing it again this summer but with a twist. Both classes and the showcase are moving online.
The 2020 Jazzed on Tap will actually be a review of the best performances from the past ten years, 2009-2019, featuring some of the biggest stars of this uniquely American dance form, such as Sam Weber, Lisa La Touche, Tre Dumas, Brenna Kuhn, Max Pollack, Nicole Hockenberry, and San Antonio’s own Barbara Phillips, who is the mastermind behind the whole project. They will be accompanied by the excellent Mark Rubinstein Jazz Trio.

Dancers interested in advancing their skills, will, once again, be able to take classes with the distinguished artists listed above but it will be “from their own living rooms.” They can choose from three different levels and from a total of 19 classes. Another fabulous offering that’s bound to lift your spirits is a gift from the Mastersingers and members of the San Antonio Symphony. These generous artists have joined forces to perform the 5th movement – the grand finale – of Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony, “together but recorded individually in isolation.” The mini-concert is conducted by no other than Sebastian Lang-Lessing and features J’Nai Bridges and Deanna Breiwick as soloists. Over at the Magik Theatre, they have something special for the little ones – a virtual premiere of “A Kids’ Play About Racism,” a theatrical adaptation of Jelani Memory’s book by the same name. It will premiere Aug. 1-2 on the streaming platform Broadway on Demand. Adapted and directed by Khalia Davis, the play will be brought to life by an entirely black cast from across the United States. Thirty-seven children’s theaters joined forces to make this project a reality.
The Jump-Start Performance Co. is opening an original play-with-music this weekend. Written and performed by Marisela Barrera, “Tejana Rasquacha” will be live-streamed July 25 and 26 at 8 p.m.
“Barrera infuses urban myths with real-talk about the quarantine,” says the press release. The play will also feature pre-recorded monologue segments, filmed at various San Antonio locations, as well as live Zoom audience interaction segments broadcast from Barrera’s home. Also, the funny playwright, Linda Kaufman, author of the successful “Senior Moments” comedies is featured tonight in the Encore Lounge. https://bit.ly/3jrr4q2. She writes both the scripts and the scores for her shows, and won the ATAC Globe Award for Original Score twice, in 1993 and again in 1997.
