Poets Respond to the Uvalde Tragedy, Part 13

UVALDE, TX

By JANIE ALONSO

My body feels like my wings have been pulled off, slowly.
My iridescent purple appendages of creativity and lightness are lying on the ground.

I feel defeated, broken, my hopeful spirit on the verge of extinction.

My mind is with the children whose lives have been evaporated in the hot Texas sun.

My soul cries out for justice.

Anger and sadness blend

A purge of wailing has not completed the healing.

We release tears and anger
to see with eyes of clarity.

We have relentless work to do
and we will not forget.

We cannot forget.

We cannot forget.
