Life in the Time of COVID-19, Part 31

The insightful poem we are bringing to you today is by Glover Davis, professor emeritus of creative writing at the San Diego State University and the author of six poetry collections. The roaming wolf image was created by Heinz Stiefel for Getty Images.

But I have Bad Dreams
By Glover Davis

Fear of the virus makes us stay
inside or pull on masks and gloves
keeping safe distances at stores.
We smile and wave at those we love.

But dream our neighbors rove like wolves
across dew frosted lawns and leave
misshapen prints of paws or hooves
among the sparkling, moon tipped blades.

Tonight, I may witness again
evidence of disease encased
so firmly in a dream’s gouged clefts
it won’t be easily erased.
